I guess it was inevitable I was going to get into marketing of some kind. My parents would always joke that I could sell ice to an Eskimo. When I put this to the test for my first job while at school, working at my local Video Ezy store (RIP), I enjoyed helping people find something they wanted to watch based on their preferences.
It led me to completing a Bachelor of Communication and an additional Honours year at the University of Newcastle. From there, I’ve been lucky enough through my connections to gain a breadth of knowledge across various roles in higher education. A bit of a classic “it’s not what you know but who you know”, but I’ve been lucky to also learn a lot along the way.
After a brief stint in the not-for-profit sector, managing a project focusing on capturing the lives of those living with disability on film, I found my way back into the higher education sector, working on marketing campaigns for the University of Newcastle. Now I’m a Campaigns Specialist, where my job is to manage paid marketing and direct communications initiatives for recruiting domestic postgraduate students. I now help others find their next career path, not just a movie to watch.
Being a part of AMI’s Emerging Marketers Program in 2021 has helped me focus on my own career path. It’s something we all know we should do but often put on the backburner. Having a mentor and dedicated time to think about career planning really brings your goals to the forefront. It has led me to finally take the leap and start postgraduate studies of my own. I am currently enrolled in a Graduate Certificate in Business Administration with an MBA in my sights. Without AMI I might not have finally taken that leap and I appreciate the program giving me the perspective and push I needed.
